UPDATED 2:10 p.m.A Stow-Munroe Falls High School student has been charged in one of two Craigslist-related shootings in southern Ohio. The boy, 16-year-old Brogan Rafferty, is charged with attempted murder and complicity to attempted murder. The announcement came Friday in a joint press release by Noble County Prosecutor Clifford Sickler and Sheriff Stephen Hannum. An anticipated press conference Friday morning with the Noble County sheriff was cancelled. County Judge John W. Nau issued a gag order preventing Hannum from releasing any further information.“The investigation is moving swiftly but also deliberately,” the news release stated. The high school junior and Richard Beasley, a 52-year-old Akron man, are in custody as suspects in a potential homicide case related to the shooting death of a man who may have been lured to Ohio by a bogus ad on Craigslist.Efforts to reach Rafferty’s family Friday were not successful.Beasley has not been charged in the slaying or in a similar shooting related to the Craigslist ad. He is being held in the Summit County Jail on multiple counts related to prostitution. His bond is set at $1 million. His attorney could not be reached for comment. The body of a Florida man was found Tuesday buried in a shallow grave near Caldwell in southeast Ohio. The man’s identity has not been released. An autopsy was to be performed Thursday. A second person, also lured by the same ad, was shot and injured earlier this month.Stow-Munroe Falls Superintendant Russ Jones would only say that the student is a 16-year-old boy who is in the 11th grade. He was taken into custody from his home in Stow on Wednesday.“I’m kind of bound by the specifics of what I can share,” Jones said. “I can tell you it had nothing to do with the safety or security of our students or staff.”Noble County Sheriff Stephen Hannum issued a news release detailing his department’s investigation:Deputies in Noble County began investigating a possible robbery and shooting on Nov. 6. A South Carolina man told deputies he was lured to Marietta to meet with two men about an ad on Craigslist seeking a worker to help on a 688-acre cattle ranch. After eating in Marietta, the victim and the two men drove to Caldwell and then to Stock Township. At some point, the victim was told the road was closed and they would have to walk. As they moved through the heavily wooded area, the victim said he heard a gun being cocked. As he turned, he saw the gun pointed to his head. He managed to deflect the weapon and run. As he ran, he was shot in the arm. More shots followed. For the next seven hours, the man hid until he was able to reach a home and call for help.On Nov. 11, a Boston woman called deputies about her missing twin brother. She believed her brother answered the same Craigslist ad. He had not been seen since Oct. 22 when he was in Parkersburg, W.Va.Based on the information, deputies returned to the area where the Nov. 6 shooting occurred. On Monday, they found evidence related to that shooting. The next day, using cadaver dogs, the body was found in a shallow grave.“We believe the attempted murder of victim number one and the likely murder of victim number two are connected and possibly committed by the same person,” Hannum said in his statement.Authorities are believed to have identified the suspect through their Internet use, including emails and text messages.According to an interview aired Thursday by WEWS (Channel 5) Hannum said the surviving victim “had been corresponding with this ‘Jack’ via email and text messaging, so with some forensic evidence from computers, that led us to our suspects.”Stow police referred questions to the Cincinnati office of the FBI. A spokesman said he could not comment. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations is also assisting.Phil Trexler can be reached at 330-996-3717 or ptrexler@thebeaconjournal.com.
